We really hate doing that because:
- Printed items need to be stored in real-life files. Filing cabinets are friends of entropy—it takes a lot of work to maintain them. It’s so much easier to manage and find documents if you keep them digitally.
- Printers are needy machines. Printers are clunky, capricious beasts. How many times have you wanted to hit your printer with your shoe? “WHY WON’T YOU PRINT?”
Our solution is to keep things in digital format as much as possible, and when something absolutely needs to be printed, we go to FedEx. Let them maintain the clunky beasts.
Unfortunately, this methodology has its downsides. When your printer is FedEx, getting anything printed means a half-hour trip out of the office, 20 minutes downloading the document to the PC kiosk in-store, then the actual printing. A pain in the neck, yes, but I think it’s still worth it to outsource our printing.
Today I logged on to fedex.com and learned I can upload directly from my Google Docs account, and the FedEx people will print it and even ship it for me, if I need to. Or even give me same-day courier service to my office.
AND they integrate with Google Docs. I don’t know about you, but it makes me think Fedex is pretty cool.
